With profound grief, the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) mourns the demise of former Kerala Ranji Trophy cricketer, Shri Velayudhanpillai Manikanta Kurup.

A stalwart of Kerala cricket, V. M. Kurup was a prominent left-arm medium pace bowler who represented the state with distinction from the 1965/66 to the 1972/73 season. Hailing from Trivandrum, he was renowned for his impeccable accuracy, his ability to swing the ball, and a remarkable knack for claiming the wickets of the country’s top batsmen.
During a formative era for Kerala cricket, Kurup was our dependable strike bowler. His list of prized scalps is a testament to his immense skill, featuring legends like Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, M. L. Jaisimha, Gundappa Viswanath, Abbas Ali Baig, Brijesh Patel, and E. A. S. Prasanna.

His finest hour came in the 1969/70 season, where he took 14 wickets, including a memorable spell of 5 for 47 against Andhra at the University Stadium, Trivandrum. He also shone against international opposition, taking five wickets in a first-class match against the touring Ceylon team in 1971.

While statistics alone do not capture his full impact, V. M. Kurup’s contributions were invaluable. He was an inspiration for many, proving that a cricketer from Kerala could challenge and dismiss the very best in the nation. He laid a strong foundation and his legacy will continue to be remembered.

The entire cricketing fraternity of Kerala extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
