Sanju Samson’s 43 ball 56 guided Kerala to a 49 run victory in their opening match against Goa in the 2014-15 South Zone qualifiers of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the batting friendly conditions at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, Kerala scored 155 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Samson and Rohan Prem stitched together a partnership of 45 runs from 39 balls to guide Kerala to a respectable total.

Samson’s blissful knock of 56 which included three fours and two sixes ended with a loose shot which was played back to the stumps. Samson was ably supported by brisk twenties of Rohan Prem and Sachin Mohan. Captain Sachin Baby was caught by Amit Yadav on the bowling of Kevin D’Costa for an uninspiring four runs.

Goa’s chase never gathered any pace with wickets falling at regular intervals. Twenties from Captain Swapnil Asnodkar and Rohit Asnodkar were the only saving grace in the Goa innings which was bundled out for a paltry score of 106 in 17.5 overs. Kerala’s spin duo of left arm spinner Prasanth Padmanabhan and leggie Amit Verma destroyed the Goa batsmen with both taking three wickets for 14 runs. Manu Krishnan, Sandeep Warrier, Rohan Prem and Raiphi Gomez chipped in with one wicket each.

In their second group match tomorrow at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, Kerala will face a Tamil Nadu team which defeated Hyderabad by 36 runs in their opening game. Goa will lock horns with Karnataka who suffered an embarrassing seven wicket defeat against Andhra. The top two sides from each zone will move into the knockout stages.
